IoT and OSS Links — Feb 23
I spend a fair bit of time reading and researching the IoT and open source industry. A number of years ago I got into the habit of blogging on weekly basis some of the more interesting links I discovered. I am going to try to get back into this weekly habit. Here is my first set of IoT and OSS Links.
1. Bosch Connected World
This week Bosch held their annual Bosch Connected World conference in Berlin. Over the last 5 years I have watch Bosch become one of the leaders in the industrial IoT. This week Bosch seems to have cemented their leadership in IoT, especially with IoT developers. During the event Bosch ran a IoT hackathon with 800 developers. This has to be the largest IoT hackathon hosted by any vendor or organization. They also ran an amazing social media campaign to highlight the event.
There are lots of industrial companies trying to break into IoT but Bosch is definitely leading the way.
2. Google Buys Xively
This week Google announced it was buying Xively from LogMeIn. Xively has been around for a relatively long tim and is one of the original IoT platforms. Google purchasing the technology certainly reflects Google is starting to invest in IoT.
Google also announced their Google Cloud IoT Core is now generally available.
3. Github report on open source trends in 2018
Github released a report on open source trends in 2018. Machine Learning, cross platform development are some of the key areas but so is skills development. I’ve always thought open source was a way to enable developers to learn new technologies. I need to take a look at some of these projects.
4. Events and surveys
Some industry events have their call for papers coming up:
- AllthingOpen just announced their CfP. Deadline is April 24.
- IoT Slam deadline for CfP is next week, Feb. 28
The Eclipse IoT developer survey is open and looking for participants. The deadline to complete the survey is March 5. The results from these past survey have always provided useful insight into the IoT developer community.
